Performance of the play “The Physician of Turkistan” at the 4th Turkic World Student Theatre Festival of TURKSOY
The 4th International Student Theatre Festival of the Turkic World held in the city of Turkistan in Kazakhstan under the auspices of the International Organisation of Turkic Culture (TURKSOY) with the support of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Organization (TIKA), the Hoca Ahmet Yesevi International Turkish-Kazakh University, the Regional Administration of Turkistan, the Municipal Council of Turkistan and the Ministry of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan featured a performance of the play “The Physician of Turkistan” by the Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture.
Supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Uzbekistan and featuring students from the Institute’s Faculty of Performing Arts, the production featuring this one-act comedy written in 1918 by Mannon Uygur, one of the leading figures of Uzbek theatre, is a humorous satire of social issues of the era such as ignorance and false ‘intellectuals’. The concept of the ‘doctor’ in the play represents not merely someone who treats physical illnesses, but a symbolic figure who diagnoses and heals the ills of society in the light of reason, knowledge and sound thinking.
Despite having been written a century ago by Uygur, who viewed theatre as a means of enlightenment and education, this early work which still entertains audiences whilst provoking thought through its universal messages remains as relevant as ever today.
Successful stage performance by students
The production, with Associate Professor Farruh Egamberdiyev as artistic director and director, and Senior Lecturer Sahibcan Valiyev as assistant director, featured a large cast of students.

- The Doctor: Kuvanchbek Marupov
- The Servant: Bahram Ruzimbayev
- Aynisa: Shahinabanu Ashilova
- The Widow: Madinahan Abdusamatova
- Patients: Serdarbek Kudratov, Abdulaziz Gulamov, Shahcihan Hakberdiyev
- Fools: Nigara Sanatcanova, Zarina Usmanova, Reyhana Shemsiddinova, Sabina Shemsiddinova
While the visual and audio design of the performance were ensured by stage designer Alishir Tulabayev and sound engineer Dilshadbek Amrullayev, the actors’ make-up and face painting were made by the instructor Rabiya Rızayeva and fourth-year students.
