Within the framework of the 4th International Student Theatre Festival of the Turkic World organized under the auspices of the International Organisation of Turkic Culture (TURKSOY) with the support of TIKA, the Khoja Akhmet Yassawi International Turkic-Kazakh University, the Governorate and the Municipality of Turkistan and the Ministry of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan, the Mollanepes Student Theatre of the State Institute of Culture of Turkmenistan performed the play “Bedev Sarpası”.

The event held at the festival with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan was directed by Merdan Handurdiyev and received the prize for ‘Best Treatment of a National Theme’ by the jury of the festival. While actors who took the scene at the event were Mekan Muratberdiyev, Leyli Şallıyeva, Serdar Daliyev, Ene Erekova, Gülsoltan Saparova, Muhammedeyyup Amanov, Akmuhammet Hocageldiyev, Bahar Bayramova, Bezirgen Niyazov, Diyar Gurbanguliyev, Roza Övliyaguliyeva and Seyran Geldiyev, Oraz Atayev was responsible for technical aspects.

Adapted from the works by Hero Arkadağ

One of the plays which left a lasting impression on the festival, was the adaptation of works by the national leader of Turkmenistan, Hero Arkadağ Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov: “The Horse – A Symbol of Loyalty and Happiness” and “Principles of Turkmen Statehood” which focused on Sultan Hüseyin Baykara and his wise vizier, Mıralı.

The story recounts how the Sultan, ignoring warnings, unjustly exiled his vizier and his loyal chestnut horse to the desert; following the horse’s death from thirst, prosperity vanished from the Sultan’s realm. Years later, during a visit to a mausoleum in the hope of having a child, people realise that this place where they are praying is actually the grave of the faithful horse which had died. Here, the Sultan encounters the vizier he had exiled and asks him for for forgiveness.

Enriched with traditional patterns, the play conveyed to the audience values, such as  loyalty and forgiveness associated with the horse in Turkmen culture through a simple theatrical language.
