International conference on the cultural heritage of the Turkic World in Kokand
An international conference entitled "The Role of the Kokand Khanate in the Development of the State Tradition and Cultural Heritage of Turkic Peoples" was held in Kokand which is one of the ancient cities of Uzbekistan.
The conference held in cooperation of the Organization of Turkic States with TURKSOY, the Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan, the Governorate of the Province of Fergana and the Kokand University featured an opening speech by TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev.
Secretary General Sultan Raev who said that with its rich historical heritage and unique culture Uzbekistan is a precious treasure of the Turkic World as well as of world civilization in general further added that as a result of activities it carried out within the last few years, Uzbekistan has reached major achievements in the fields of politics, economy and culture amongst others.
Secretary General Raev also stressed that cultural values of the Khanate of Kokand as well as of similar ancient cities of the Turkic World which are known for their rich history and culture must be unveiled and introduced to the world through this kind of international conferences as this is of key importance in terms of the preservation of our cultural heritage. Mr. Raev added that: ”It is a fact that the city of Kokand was the pearl of a period of the history of the Valley of Fergana. As such it is a unique component of our cultural heritage. Indeed, Kokand was home to many Turkic peoples such as the Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Uygur, Kazak and Karakalpak peoples amongst others who lived here together. Hence, Kokand has not only been one of the important cities of that period of history in cultural and artistic terms but also a city of mutual tolerance and peace. Therefore, I believe that the city of Kokand should serve as an example of the administrative system of a megapol and that extensive research should be done thereon today. As a matter of fact, Kokand is known as the cradle of the institutionalization of the state tradition of Turkic peoples. It is also known for its equitable rules, humanism and tolerance thanks to which it has not only contributed to the development of Central Asian civilization but also of humanity in general. Kokand is also known as a city of famous poets who lived and worked here. Indeed, during the reign of Omer Khan and his son Muhammed Ali Khan, Kokand was a center of literature where poets worked under the auspices of the Khanate and received its financial support. Some of the Khans who were interested in poetry and also wrote poems themselves are even known to have come together with these poets to have conversations with them, hence also encouraging the development of poetry. It is also known that as one of the literature traditions of Turkic peoples, epic legends were also appreciated in the Khanate of Kokand."
