Exhibition on the European Capital of Culture in Khiva the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World

Upon initiative of TURKSOY which carries out activities to promote the culture and art of Turkic peoples and around the world and assumes the function of a cultural bridge between Europe and the Turkic World a photography exhibition introducing  introducing the Croatian city of Rijeka, the European Capital of Culture 2020 to citizens of Khiva, the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2020.

The photography exhibition organized by TURKSOY and held  within the framework of its activities to bring together citizens of the European Capitals of Culture and Cultural Capitals of the Turkic World  was the continuation of this initiative within the framework of which an exhibition on "Impressions from Khiva" was previously opened in Rijeka in April earlier this year. The opening ceremony of the photography exhibition on Rijeka, the European Capital of Culture 2020 held in Khiva gathered TURKSOY  Secretary General  Dusen Kasseinov, the Director General of the Agency of Cultural Heritage Tursunali Koziyev, the Deputy Governor of Khorezm Batır Saidov, the Mayor of Rijeka  Marko Filipovich and the Mayor of Khiva along with officials.

In  the opening speech he  delivered at the opening of the exhibition Secretary General Kasseinov   congratulated Turkic republics which celebrate the 30th anniversary of their independence this year as well as Croatia. Secretary General Kasseinov who further said that with its project on Cultural Capitals of the Turkic World TURKSOY promotes ancient cities of the Turkic World on a global scale and added that within this framework, an exhibition on Khiva was held in Rijeka, the European Capital of Culture 2020 and that now, Rijeka, the Pearl of the Adriatic Sea is being introduced to citizens of Khiva. Secretary General  Kasseinov said: “This exhibition organized in coooperation of the Secretariat General of TURKSOY with the Municipality of Rijeka aims at the promotion of the European Capital of Culture. The most important reason why we are holding this exhibition is to contribute to the rapprochement of cultures while introducing one of the most important port cities of Western civilization to you. Thanks to this project, urban diplomacy between our cities and regions is gaining impetus.  We are happy to see that our initiative to foster interaction among Cultural Capitals of the Turkic World  and cities declared as European Capital of Culture  is bringing about fruitful results.”

The exhibition held in the “Tash Avlu “ Palace of the historical Ichan Kala which is one of the pearls ancient architecture of Uzbekistan features many photographs of the historical sites of Rijeka, the European Capital of Culture and will be open to visitors for three days.

Cooperation protocol signed between Khiva and Rijeka

Since 2016, TURKSOY has been relentlessly working on the establishment of cooperation ties between European Capitals of Culture and Cultural Capitals of the Turkic World. Within this framework, TURKSOY held many cultural events in cities of Europe such as  Pilzen (Czech Republic), Plovdiv (Bulgaria) and  Rijeka (Croatia).

Upon initiative of TURKSOY and as a result of its long-dating ties with the European Union, a bilateral cooperation protocol of historical importance was signed between Rijeka which bore the title of European Capital of Culture for the first time in 2020 and Khiva, the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2020.

At the ceremony held in Khiva, the protocol marking the first step of the mutual cooperation between TURKSOY and Rijeka to be further strengthened in the fields of economy, tourism and sports amongst others  was signed by the Mayor of Rijeka  Mr. Marko Filipovich and the Mayor of Khiva Mr. Timur Davletov.

Mayors who took the floor at the signature ceremony  mutually conveyed their invitation to one another to attend events which will be held in their respective cities. The Mayor of Rijeka Mr. Filipovich invited the delegation from Khiva to attend the traditional carnival of Rijeka to be held at the end of February 2022 as well as the opening ceremony of “Galeb”, the historical ship of Tito, one of the leaders of the Soviet block which has been turned into a museum. In return, the Mayor of Khiva invited the delegation from  Rijeka to the  “Lezgi Dance Festival”.

Visit to the Governor of Khorezm

Within the framework of its visit to Khiva on the occasion of the exhibition on Rijeka held therein, the delegation composed of TURKSOY Secretary General Dusen Kasseinov and the Mayor of Rijeka  paid a visit to the Governor of Khorezm, Mr. Ferhad Ermanov.
