The minstrel of the Turkic World Âşık Elesger was commemorated in TURKSOY Headquarters

On the 200th anniversary of his birthday, the legendary minstrel of the Turkic World Âşık Elesger who is famous for new types of poems he has enriched our oral tradition with was commemorated in TURKSOY Headquarters. 

The opening speeches of the event organized in cooperation of TURKSOY with the Culture Committee of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan and held in the Conference Hall of TURKSOY were delivered by  Secretary General Dusen Kasseinov, the MP and Chairman of the Culture Committee of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan Genire Pashayeva, the First Secretary of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Ankara Elhan Zeynalov and the representative of the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan.

Secretary General Kasseinov who said that with the precious legacy they left behind, illustrious personalities of the Turkic World transcended the borders of time and space further said that the minstrel Aşık Elesger is one of these great figures of our history.

Mr. Kasseinov also said: “The minstrel Âşık Elesger who is one of the most important figures of minstrelship of Azerbaijan in the 19th century is a classic of the minstrel literature of , Azerbaijan. This famous minstrel whom we are paying tribute to today made strong contributions to the development of the art of minstrelship of  Azerbaijan and left behind precious works.

We are happy to present the to you this book which we published on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birthday of Âşık Elesger, the great minstrel of the Turkic World and which contains the Turkish translation of selected poems he sang and performed for many years.”

Secretary General Kasseinov also expressed his gratitude to Mr. Kenan Çarboğa who translated  Âşık Elesger’s poems into Turkish and thanked all those who contributed to the publication of the book.

Mrs. Genire Paşayeva who congratulated kindred countries of the Turkic World on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the independence of Turkic states thanked TURKSOY for having organized this  commemorative event dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birthday of Âşık Elesger.

Mrs. Paşayeva who stressed the sorrow of the people of Azerbaijan due to the fact that the ancient Azerbaijani territory of Göyçe where Âşık Elesger was born and grew up was given to Armenia by the Soviets said: “It is a deep sorrow in our hearts that the ancient territory of Göyçe where Âşık Elesger was born and grew up  was forcefully taken from Azerbaijan and added  to the territory of Armenia. Now, Âşık Elesger’s home and grave has been destroyed by Armenians and we cannot visit the grave of this great minstrel of ours on this important anniversary.”

Mrs. Paşayeva stressed the importance of activities which will be carried out upon oder of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan  to commemorate Âşık Elesger on the 200th anniversary of his birthday and promote the cultural heritage he left behind on a large scale and underlined the support provided by kindred organizations of the Turkic World in this respect. Mrs. Paşayeva who   said “Âşık Elesger means Göyçe” also added that  promoting the legacy of Âşık Elesger also means to disclose and announce the reality about this territory forcefully taken from Azerbaijan and given to Armenia.

The First Secretary of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Ankara Mr.  Elhan Zeynalov stressed that throughout his short stay in Ankara, he witnessed many events carried out by TURKSOY and touched upon the importance of this event deciated to Âşık Elesger who is considered as one of the best minstrels of  Azerbaijan.

The  opening speeches were followed by presentation and  ribbon-cutting ceremony of the book on “Âşık Elesger” featuring his poems translated into Turkish by the poet Kenan Çarboğa  and published by TURKSOY.

The grandson of Âşık Elesger and chairman of the “Dede Elesger Ocağı” Hatai Elesger, the Chairman of the Turkish Research Center of the Cumhuriyet University, poet and translator Kenan Çarboğa, the Chairman of the  association “Ozan Dünyası - Âşık yaratıcılığı Tebliği” Musa Nebioğlu, the author and researcher Songül Dündar and the Chairman of the Association “Dünya Süz Akademisi” Mr. Hayrettin Ivgin made presentations on  Âşık Elesger, his life, art and works.

The event ended with a performance of the minstrel’s works by the minstrel Âşık Ramin (Azerbaijan) and the minstrel Âşık Selahattin Dündar (Turkey).
