Yirchi Kazak, the famous poet and minstrel of the Kumyk people was commemorated in TURKSOY Headquarters
The 19th edition of the series of conferences of TURKSOY on illustrious personalities of the Turkic World who marked the culture and art of Turkic peoples was dedicated to the famous Kumyk poet and minstrel Yirchi Kazak on the occasion of the 190th anniversary of his birthday.
The conference entitled “The Famous Kumyk poet and minstrel Yirchi Kazak on the 190th anniversary of his birthday took place on September 14th, 2020. The opening speech of the conference chaired by the Deputy Secretary General of TURKSOY was delivered by the Secretary General of TURKSOY Mr. Dusen Kasseinov.
In his speech, Mr. Kasseinov said that TURKSOY is committed to the preservation of the cultural heritage of Turkic speaking countries as well as of Turkic communities living in various countries and added that the Kumyk people is a one of Turkic communities with a great cultural heritage.
Mr. Kasseinov who also stressed that just as other Turkic peoples, the Kumyks are also known for their exceptional talent in the field of literature further added: “One of these famous authors is the poet Yirchi Kazak whom we are commemorating today on the occasion of the 190th anniversary of his birthday. As we pay tribute to this illustrious figure of the Kumyk people let me stress that Yirchi Kazak was not only a Kumyk but also a Caucasian who left behind a great heritage in terms of world literature. Yirchi Kazak whose real name was Kazak Tatarhan is the author of poems dealing with morals, recommendations, love, philosophy and struggle for justice as well as with major historical facts. With his poems written in Kumyk language and featuring a colourful literary style, Yirchi Kazak is known and appreciated as a poet who did not surrender. Therefore, I think that each and everyone of us has an important mission to assume: we must read works by this legendary author and transmit his legacy to future generations.”
The conference went on with paper presentations on the life and work of Yirchi kazak by scholars from the Dagestan Republic (RF) and Turkey. Papers presented at the conference were “Yırçı Kazak’s Lyrical Style” by Prof. Dr. Erol Öztürk from the Izzet Baysal University of Abant, “Yirchi Kazak-The Founder of Written Kumyk Turkic Language” by Prof. Dr. Çetin Pekacar from the Hacı Bayram Veli University of Ankara, “Yirchi Kazak and the Principles of his Literary Creativity as a Classic of Kumyk Literature” by Prof. Dr. Imperiyat Halipayeva from the State Pedagogical University of Dagestan, “Yirchi Kazak in Foreign Research and Works” by the Chairman of the Union of Kumyk Science and Culture Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kamil Aliyev, and “Yirchi Kazak and the Living Oral Literature of the Kumyk People of Turkey” by the Kumyk researcher and author Tevfik Zengin.
The online conference ended with a reading of Yirchi Kazak’s poems by the Kumyk poet Bahavutdin Samedov.
