Presentation of the book "Wisemen's Word: Proverbs and Expressions of Khakas Turks”

The book published by the International Organization of Turkic Culture TURKSOY entitled "Wisemen's Word: Proverbs and Expressions of Khakas Turks” was presented in TURKSOY Headquarters in Ankara.
The presentation event hosted by TURKSOY Secretary General Dusen Kasseinov gathered a large audience and took place with the contribution of Prof. Dr. Özkul Çobanoğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kara, Mrs. Nükhet Okutan and Timur Davletov.
In the opening speech he delivered at the event, TURKSOY Secretary General Dusen Kasseinov stressed that this is the first academic publication on Khakas proverbs and expressions and expressed his confidence in the fact that it will certainly raise the interest of many readers and scholars who are keen on turcology.
Mr. Kasseinov also said that as an international organization celebrating the 25th anniversary of its establishment this year, TURKSOY further pursues its activities to explore and efficiently promote the culture and art of Turkic peoples worldwide: “This time, TURKSOY is introducing the rich oral tradition of the Khakas people which has ever since been preserving its language in the region where it lives in the Minusinsk Valley along the Yenisei River in the heart of the Asian continent, reaching from the North East of the Altai mountains in Siberia .”
Prof. Dr. Özkül Çobanoğlu who also delivered a speech at the event said that proverbs and expressions play a key role in the common culture of Turkic peoples. Prof. Dr. Çobanoğlu further stressed that the European Union has issued an anthology of proverbs and expressions showing the common cultural roots and similarities of worldviews among its peoples. Prof. Dr. Çobanoğlu said that in line with this publication, he has prepared a Dictionary of Common Proverbs of the Turkic World and added that this compilation of proverbs and expressions will play a key role in the communication among Turkic peoples as their common language. Prof. Dr. Çobanoğlu concluded his speech saying that this book also plays an important role in terms of its content which is the result of a comprehensive research and compilation of proverbs and expressions of each and every Turkic people.
The author of the book Mrs. Nükhet Okutan who also shared her views on her work entitled "Wisemen's Word: Proverbs and Expressions of Khakas Turks” stressed that proverbs and expressions are the result of a people's experiences and history deeply rooted in its past and that the Khakas people have embedded their ancient traditions and worldview in these proverbs.
Mrs. Okutan who also said that despite the geographical disctance separating Anatolia from Siberia, the land where the Khakas people live, their common cultural memory is still alive as a tangible proof of the social and cultural interaction which is still existing between the Khakas people and the Turkic people of Anatolia.
Assoc. Prof. Dr Mehmet Kara who also delivered a speech at the presentation event said that previous academic research on the Khakas Turkic language show that compared to the Turkic language spoken by the Tyvan people, the Khakas Turkic language has been less influenced by Mongolian language despite the geographical vicinity. Prof. Dr. Kara who said that the Khakas language is considered as a language which is threatened to disapper also touched upon the interaction, similarities and differences between the Khakas language and other Turkic languages and gave some concrete examples of vowel shifts as well as voiced and unvoiced consonants.
The Experts of TURKSOY on Siberia Mr. Timur Davletov who also contributed to the event said that the publication of this book dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the birthday of the famous Khakas folklorist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ulyana N. Kirbijekova is all the more so meaningful as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Khakas Philology of the Khakas State University.
The presentation event ended with the handing over of certificates and a group photograph.
