UNESCO National Commissions of the Turkic World discussed the Day of Turkic Language
The UNESCO National Commission of Turkey held a consultative meeting gathering UNESCO National Commissions on the Day of Turkic Language
The meeting held in Ankara, the capital of Turkey on March 9th, 2018 gathered the Deputy Secretary General of TURKSOY Prof.Dr. Fırat Purtaş along with representatives of the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking Countries (Turkic Council) as well as of international organizations of the Turkic World and of UNESCO National Commissions of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
In the meeting, delegations exchanged views on the date to be determined as International Day of Turkic Language in the world and UNESCO. November 25th, 1993, the date known as the day on which the Danish linguist Wilhelm Thomsen deciphered the ancient Turkic alphabet received the majority of the votes.
Prof. Dr. M. Öcal Oğuz, the Chairman of the UNESCO National Commission of Turkey said that the aim is to introduce Turkish as the seventh official language of UNESCO.
Participants of the meeting agreed that the final decision shall be met upon negociations among UNESCO National Commissions of Turkic countries and UNESCO member countries.
