-TURKSOY brings peoples and youngsters closer together-
The Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey Mr. Numan Kurtulmus who delivered a speech at the end of the concert touched upon the history of TURKSOY and said: "TURKSOY is an international organization which carries out activities to foster cultural cooperation among countries of the Turkic World, promote Turkic culture and the mutual exchange of views in the field of culture with a view to ensuring the rapprochement of countries. Hence, we can say that TURKSOY is the UNESCO of the Turkic World. I hope that TURKSOY will grow even stronger and further act as a cultural organization of the Turkic World which brings peoples and youngsters of its member countries closer together. With its initiative to declare one city of the Turkic World as its cultural capital every year, TURKSOY aims at exactly this rapprochement through cultural activities it organizes in this capital. Up to now, six cities of the Turkic World have born this title. This year, the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World is the city of Kastamonu which will host various cultural events within this framework".
The Minister who also stressed that events to be carried out in Kastamonu throughout the year will be a strong contribution to the worldwide promotion of Kastamonu added: "As Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2018, the city of Kastamonu will host more than 50 events. These will give a strong impetus to the international promotion of Kastamonu as well as of Turkic culture. In fact Kastamonu has long deserved the title of Cultural Capital. I think that this title perfectly suits Kastamonu."
- Kastamonu has strong ties with the Turkic World –
The Minister who also said that Kastamonu has strong ties with the Turkic World and the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2017, stressed the fact that: "Kastamonu has deeply rooted ties with Asia. Indeed, Kastamonu has also been an important city in the history of the expansion of Islam from Khorasan to Europe after the prophet with teachings of Khoja Akhmet Yassawi and Şeyh Şaban-ı Veli. Kastamonu is an important city which has successfully preserved this historical tie."
-From Akhmet Yassawi and Turkistan to Şaban-ı Veli and Kastamonu-
In the speech he delivered, TURKSOY Secretary General Dusen Kasseinov said: "This year is a special year for us. Indeed, TURKSOY which is the UNESCO of the Turkic World is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. TURKSOY has gained worldwide recognition as an institution of cultural diplomacy with its 25 years of experience and will now organize cultural events in Kastamonu throughout 2018. The previous Cultural Capital of the Turkic World was the city of Turkistan in Kazakhstan. 2017 has been a fruitful year during which many activities dedicated to the commemoration of Khoja Akhmet Yasssawi were organized. This year, we will be carrying out many projects in Kastamonu, the city of Saban-ı Veli who played a key role in the expansion of Islam in Anatolia.”
-Union of Cultural Capitals of the Turkic World -
Prof. Kasseinov who said that further steps are under way to ensure the unity of Cultural Capitals of the Turkic World added: “We also intend to create a Union of Cultural Capitals of the Turkic World which Kastamonu will be the center of. This Union will not only institutionalize Cultural Capitals of the Turkic World but also may give impetus to the cooperation among our local governments. There are currently seven cities of Turkic republics which hold this title. These cities have considerable experience in the field of cultural heritage management and urban diplomacy. Some of our cultural capitals were later included in cultural heritage lists of UNESCO. This is also true for Kastamonu: following its title of Cultural Capital of the Turkic World Kastamonu should apply for UNESCO’s programmes with a view to introducing its rich intangible and tangible cultural heritage to the world. To support this process and contribute to it, TURKSOY will be cooperating with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey as well as with the National Commission of TURKEY to UNESCO and other partner institutions.”
-Every citizen of the Cultural Capital will have to make its contribution-
The Governor of Kastamonu Yaşar Karadeniz who delivered a speech at the meeting said that all institutions concerned will have to cooperate in order to contribute to the promotion and development of Kastamonu. Mr. Karadeniz further said: “The main work and responsability starts once a city has been declared as Cultural Capital and everyone has to make its own contribution to be up to this responsibility. We must take this opportunity to do all our very best and promote Kastamonu in 2018, because this is what Kastamonu really needs. That is to say, we must work with great accuracy to ensure the visibility of our activities not only in Turkey and in the Turkic World but also worldwide”.
-Great Opportunity for Kastamonu -
In the speech he delivered at the meeting, the Mayor of Kastamonu Tahsin Babaş said that Kastamonu is ready to bear the title of Cultural Capital of the Turkic World and added: “This is a great opportunity for us.
