Visit of Secretary General Raev to the National Museum of Kazakhstan
TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev met with Berik Abdigaliuly, the Director of the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, during his visit to Astana to discuss opportunities for cultural cooperation between the two institutions. Following the meeting, Secretary General Raev took a special tour to learn about the museum's history and priceless collection, closely examining the works that shed light on the shared heritage of the Turkic World.
A Huge Complex Carrying the History of the Steppe into the Future
Opened on July 2, 2014, and now one of the largest museum complexes in Central Asia, the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan serves in a huge area of 74,000 square meters. Designed with 14,000 square meters of exhibition space and 5,000 square meters of storage space, the center is one of the region's most important cultural landmarks with its modern architecture and technological infrastructure.
Over 200,000 Artifacts and a Living Science Center
The museum's inventory of over 200,000 artifacts showcases Kazakhstan's deep history from ancient times to the present day. With the opening of the Paleontology Hall and the Handicrafts Center in 2023, the museum's richness extends to 20 active exhibition halls. Going beyond being just an exhibition space, the institution operates as a living science center, hosting annual scientific conferences, symposiums, and archaeological and ethnographic expeditions.
Offering professional guided tours in Kazakh, Russian, English, Chinese, and Turkish, the museum is a strong player on the international stage. As a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the institution actively pursues cultural diplomacy through partnerships with global giants such as the State Hermitage Museum, the British Museum, and the National Museum of China. In particular, the educational and workshop activities organized within the newly opened Center for Handicrafts play a critical role in preserving traditional arts and passing them on to future generations.
