A cooperation protocol envisaging joint work in the fields of culture, art, scientific research and academic activities was signed between the International Organisation for Turkic Culture (TURKSOY) and the Necmettin Erbakan University (NEU).

The cooperation between the two institutions was formalised within the framework of events organised in Konya following the declaration of 2026 as “Commemorative Year of Ziya Gökalp” by TURKSOY. The protocol was signed by TURKSOY Deputy Secretary General Sayit Yusuf and the Rector of the NEU Prof. Dr. Cem Zorlu.

The signing ceremony was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. A. Kutalmış Yalçın, the Representative of the Republic of Türkiye to TÜRKSOY; Mr. Melik Özsöz, the Head of the Department of Strategy Development and Dr. Timur Davletov, an expert at  TURKSOY along with management and academic staff members of the NEU.

The legacy of Ziya Gökalp will be kept alive in an academic context

The signed agreement is regarded as an important step towards the preservation of the shared cultural values of the Turkic World and their transmission to future generations. The first major event organised within this framework was the ‘International Symposium on Ziya Gökalp on the 150th Anniversary of his Birthday’, held at the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Conference Hall on the Köyceğiz campus of the NEU.

The symposium, which also received contributions from the Turkish Language Institution  and the National Commission of Türkiye to UNESCO, was attended by 56 scholars who examined Gökalp’s legacy from various disciplinary perspectives.

Within the framework of activities of academic diplomacy carried out by TURKSOY with higher education institutions, similar cooperation protocols had previously been implemented with the universities of Balıkesir and Düzce.

The aim of this new agreement signed with the NEU is to keep the historical and cultural heritage of the Turkic World alive not only through commemorative events, but also through joint publications, scientific research and sustainable academic work.
