The 3rd Global Media Forum of Shusha shed light upon the future of the media
Shusha, the historical and cultural treasure of Karabakh, hosted the 3rd Global Media Forum on July 19th-22nd, 2025.
The forum on ‘Digital Transformations: Strengthening Information and Media Resilience in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,’ was attended by over 140 foreign participants from 52 countries, more than 30 international news agencies, 7 global organisations, and representatives from nearly 80 media organisations.
President Aliyev: ‘We Must Manage Technology, Not Exclude It’
The forum kicked off with a special opening ceremony in Hankendi. In his speech, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev highlighted the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on the media sector:
"Artificial intelligence is now part of our lives. We cannot ignore it, but we must manage it within the framework of ethical rules. Global cooperation is essential to ensure the flow of reliable information, increase media literacy and combat disinformation."
Aliyev emphasised the importance of the younger generation having access to accurate information in the digital world and stated that Azerbaijan would support efforts in this area at international platforms.
The Future of Media Discussed in Three Main Sessions
Three important panels were held during the forum to shed light on the digital transformation of the media sector:
- ‘Innovative Approaches: Media Literacy in the Digital Age’
- The reliability of content produced by artificial intelligence,
- The role of algorithms in information filtering,
- The development of critical thinking skills.
- ‘Information Security: National and Global Threats’
- The effects of disinformation on democracy and security,
- The responsibilities of media organisations and transparency mechanisms.
- ‘Social Media and Public Opinion: How to Ensure Trust?’
- The speed and impact of misinformation,
- The importance of digital literacy education.
Azerbaijan's Reconstruction Process Examined On Site
Within the scope of the forum, participants had the opportunity to visit the post-war reconstruction areas of Karabakh. Infrastructure works, housing projects and steps taken to preserve cultural heritage in Agdam and Lachin were observed on site.
In addition, a special panel was held to mark the 105th anniversary of the Azerbaijan State News Agency AZERTAC. The panel discussed the digital transformation of traditional media and the future of artificial intelligence-supported news production.
Special Sessions for Young Media Professionals
The forum also featured special sessions for future media professionals. The media consumption habits of Generation Z, digital content strategies, and new generation journalism models were discussed.
‘Shusha Forum, an Important Step in Media Diplomacy’
The three-day forum concluded with a closing ceremony in Shusha. Participants emphasised that the event was not only a technical gathering but also a platform reflecting the cultural and historical fabric of the region.
The 3rd Global Media Forum of Shusha is considered as an important platform for dialogue aimed at strengthening the resilience of the media in the face of the challenges posed by the digital era.
