Technical preparations for joint cinema productions in the Turkic World are gaining momentum

At the panel on "Opportunities of Joint Cinema Production in the Turkic World"  held in Istanbul and attended by cinema professionals from the Turkic World, important evaluations were made regarding the legal, financial, and creative infrastructure of joint productions.

TURKSOY's Support for Cinema

The panel also highlighted TURKSOY's contributions to cinema as an organisation promoting cultural and artistic cooperation in the Turkic World. It was emphasised that TURKSOY will provide technical and organisational support to ensure that co-productions reflect the shared values of the Turkic World and its culture and transmit  it to future generations.

We Need to Produce Fewer but Higher Quality Films

Birol Güven, General Director of Cinema at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, stated that film production in Türkiye has increased but that a shift towards quality is needed, saying, ‘We don't need this many films. We need to produce fewer but more effective films. We need to move away from the “small but mine” culture and focus on joint production.’

Calls for Joint Productions from the Turkic World

Ulan Adamaliev, Director General of Cinema in Kyrgyzstan, stated that they are open to international cooperation, saying, ‘We have agreements with France, the United Kingdom, and Italy. We are also waiting for filmmakers from the Turkic World to actively participate in this cooperation.’

Asset Yernazarov from Kazakhstan said, ‘Kazakfilm has extensive post-production and production capabilities. We have started projects with Turkish companies with a 50% partnership.’

Filmmakers Must Get to Know Each Other and Produce Together

The panel pointed out that Turkic World cinema professionals do not know each other well enough. Birol Güven said, ‘We have a common cultural heritage, but as filmmakers, we are not in sufficient contact with each other. We must strengthen these ties.’

TRT Cinema Director Faruk Güven also said, ‘Platforms such as 12 Punto provide a great meeting ground for producers and directors.’

Co-productions are of strategic importance for future generations

Representatives from Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan emphasised the cultural and strategic importance of joint productions. Sahısalıh Bayramov from Turkmenistan said, “Partnerships in cinema will shape not only the present but also future generations. With state support, we produce 20 films a year. We are ready to cooperate with the Turkic World.”

The panel ended with a message that concrete steps will be taken to strengthen the cinema of the Turkic World. Joint productions, with the support of TURKSOY, will strengthen the unity of the Turkic World in the field of cinema.
