Symposium on “The contribution of Kokturk, Uyghur and Kyrgyz Khaganates to World Civilization"

TURKSOY has held yet another  conference to promote the ancient culture of the Turkic World. In this context, TURKSOY and Istanbul University (IU) co-organised an international symposium on "Contributions of the Kokturk-Uighur and Kyrgyz Khaganates to World Civilisation".

The opening speeches of the symposium held on May 4th-5th, 2023 at the Blue Hall of IU Rectorate were delivered by TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev and IU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Haluk Alkan.

In his speech, TURKSOY Secretary General Raev said that TURKSOY which further pursues its activities in line with its  mission to promote Turkic culture and introduce it  to people living on  five continents worldwide, will focus on activities that will shed light on the culture, history and common roots  uniting the Turkic World.

Secretary General Raev said, "This is the first time such an academic event is being held in Turkey on the Yenisei Kyrgyz people after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Like the Kokturk and Uighur people, the Yenisei Kyrgyz people also established a state and left runic nscriptions. Hence it is an honour for TURKSOY to be hosting such a major symposium in cooperation with Istanbul University  this year, as we are celebrating the  100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey along with the 30th anniversary of the International Organization of Turkic Culture as well as the 570th anniversary of the IU."

The Deputy Rector of the IU Prof. Dr. Haluk Alkan who also took the floor emphasized that the symposium is important in terms of shedding light on Turkic history.

The opening speeches were followed by paper  presentations of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Taşağıl on "The Place and Importance of the Gokturks in the History of the Turkish World", Prof. Dr. Kürşat Yıldırım (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, online) on "The Concept of a Global State and the Gok-Turks", Prof. Dr. Dinçer Koç on "Some Examples of Historical Awareness in the Turkish Khaganate", Prof. Dr. Ferruh Ağca (Eskişehir, online) on "Witnesses on the Spoken Language in Tunyukuk Inscriptions", Prof. Dr. Ablet Kamalov (Almaty, Kazakhstan, online) on "Presentism in Historiography: Contested History of the Uyghur Kaghanate", Prof. Dr. Konuralp Ercilasun on "The Uyghur Period in Steppe Civilization", Dr. Lect. Prof. Dr. Ali Ahmetbeyoğlu  on "The Importance of the Uyghurs in terms of Turkic History and Civilization", Prof. Dr. Tyntchtykbek Tchoroev (Prague, Czech Republic) on "The First Stages of Kyrgyz Statehood in the Ancient and Early Middle Ages", Prof. Dr. Muratbek Kozhobekov (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, online) on "The Kyrgyz Kaganate and the Geography of the Distribution of Kyrgyz Culture", Prof. Dr. Asylbek Eshiev (Celal, Kyrgyzstan, online) Asylbek Eshiev (Jalal Abad, Kyrgyzstan, online) on "Similarities and Common Features in Spiritual Beliefs and Traditions of Hun, Turkic and Kyrgyz Ethnic Groups in Ancient and Medieval Chinese Writings", Prof. Dr. Rysbek Alimov (Mainland, Kyrgyzstan, online) Rysbek Alimov (Mainz, Germany, online) on "The Place of Yenisei Kyrgyz in Old Turkic - Mongolian Language Contacts", Dr. Nurdin Useev (Astana, Kazakhstan, online) on  “The Establishment of the 'Great Kyrgyz Kaganate' According to the Inscriptions of the Kyrgyz Kaganate”, and Dr. Timur B.
