Secretary General Sultan Raev emphasised the universal role of culture at MONDIACULT 2025
The UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development (MONDIACULT 2025), held in Barcelona, Spain, from September 29th to October 1st, 2025 brought together state and government representatives from around the world. The conference, which aimed at shaping the future of cultural policies, was attended by nearly 150 ministers, deputy ministers and high-level representatives of international organisations.
Being one of UNESCO's most comprehensive meetings organised in oder to place culture at the heart of the sustainable development agenda, the conference addressed issues such as the preservation of cultural heritage, the development of creative industries, digitalisation, cultural resilience to climate change, and the financing of cultural policies.
Speaking at the opening session of the Conference, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stressed the importance of culture in global peace and social solidarity and said: ‘Culture is the common language of humanity and the foundation of peace. MONDIACULT 2025 is a historic opportunity to build a more inclusive and solidarity-based vision for the future.’
TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev who delivered a statement at the Conference highlighted the cultural diversity and common heritage of the Turkic World and recalled that, through projects carried out by TURKSOY for over 30 years, one city is declared as ‘Cultural Capital of the Turkic World’ each year and internationally promoted within this framework.
Secretary General Raev who also called upon culture to be included as an independent goal in the global development agenda 2030 further noted that the UNESCO General Conference being held in Samarkand for the first time this year is a historic turning point as this city has been declared the ‘Capital of Turkic Civilisation’ by Turkic States and that this selection stands as a testimony of the universal value of the heritage of the Turkic World.
MONDIACULT 2025 established a global consensus that culture is not only a legacy of the past but also an indispensable component of sustainable development and peace. The active participation of TURKSOY therein ensured the visibility of the role and contributions of the Turkic World in this process on the international platform.
