International Turkology Summit Held in Talas
Hosted by the Municipality of Talas and held under the auspices and with the participation of Mr. Binali Yıldırım, the Chairman of the Elders’ Council of the Organization of Turkic States, the “International Turkology Summit” took place in Talas from May 20th to May 22nd, 2026.
The summit, which addressed Turkish language, culture, common alphabet initiatives, and a vision for the cultural future, gathered diplomats, scholars, authors, artists, intellectuals and representatives of the Turkic World from Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and Hungary.
Within the framework of the summit, a visit to the Turkish Street, the inauguration of the Common Alphabet Monument, and a panel discussion on “The Common Language and Cultural Future in the Turkic World” were held.
Turkic World Music and Folk Dance Performance
The cultural part of the summit featured an artistic performance of melodies and folk dances from various regions of the Turkic World by the Turkic World Music and Folk Dance Ensemble of Talas at the Congress and Culture Center of the Kayseri University.
International Turkology Summit in Talas
The official opening ceremony of the “International Turkology Summit in Talas,” organized to mark the 100th anniversary of the Turkology Summit of Baku held in 1926 was attended by the Mayor of Talas Mustafa Yalçın, the Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to TURKSOY Mrs. Nişangül Karatayeva, the Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to TURKSOY; Mr. Marat Tagaev, the President of the Turkish Language Institution Prof. Dr. Osman Mert, the Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality of Kayseri Dr. Memduh Büyükkılıç, the Governor of Kayseri Gökmen Çiçek,, the Chairman of the Elders’ Council of the Organization of Turkic States Binali Yıldırım and other protocol members. The Mayor of Talas Mr. Mustafa Yalçın noted that events held special significance as they marked the 100th anniversary of the 1926 Turkology Summit of Baku, stating: “The fact that the torch of ideas lit a century ago is being reignited today in Talas is of immense value for the shared future of the Turkic World.” Mrs. Nishangul Karatayeva, the Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to TURKSOY, conveyed the greetings of TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev and expressed their appreciation as to the organization of such an event. Mrs. Karatayeva noted that the idea expressed a century ago continues to influence and shape the development of a shared cultural understanding among Turkic peoples even today.
Mr.Binali Yıldırım, the Chairman of the Council of Elders of the Organization of Turkic States, made the following remarks: “We are holding a very important meeting here today. This event is being held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Baku Congress of Turkology, which takes place 100 years after the First Congress of Turkology. I congratulate everyone who contributed to this effort. In fact, the issue is quite profound. The 1926 Congress of Turkology was a gathering where today’s participants came together with great hopes and expectations; over 130 delegates attended. Considering the conditions of that time, the fact that they managed to launch such an initiative and carry out such an important event is a major achievement in itself.”
In the final part of the event, a panel on “A Common Language and Cultural Future in the Turkic World” was held. During the panel, presentations were made to protocol members and young people regarding the work conducted on the Common Turkish Alphabet and the Turkology Summit.
