International Conference held on Imam Tirmidhi in Tirmiz
Activities within the scope of the First International Forum on Islamic Civilization began on July 9th with the Fourth International Conference on “The Tirmiz Hadith School: The Legacy of Scholars and Modern Research,” held in the historic city of Tirmiz in Uzbekistan.
Organized in cooperation with the Center for Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan, the Imam Tirmidhi International Scientific Research Center, and the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), the event brought together scholars from around the world to thoroughly examine the rich scientific legacy of the Tirmiz hadith school and to strengthen global academic cooperation.
Opening Ceremony and International Participation
The conference’s opening session, which began with a recitation from the Holy Quran moderated by Muzaffarhon Joniyev, the Director of the Imam Tirmidhi International Scientific Research Center, featured distinguished international figures.
The ceremony was attended by Dr. Irgash Daminov, Senior Official at the Office of the President of Uzbekistan; Dr. Usama Sayyid Mahmoud Muhammad al-Azhari, Minister of Endowments of Egypt; Dr. Ibrahim al-Hasanat, Grand Mufti of Jordan; Dr. Coşkun Yılmaz, President of the Turkish Institution of Manuscripts; Dilshod Mamadkulov, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Religious Affairs of Uzbekistan; Dr. Muhammadolim Muhammadsiddikov, Deputy Chairman of the Administration of Muslims of Uzbekistan; Prof. Dr. Mahmud Erol Kılıç, Director General of the Research Center for Islamic History, Art, and Culture (IRCICA); Dr. Muhammed Zaytun, Senator Abdulhakim Eşmuradov, Chair of the Committee on Judicial and Legal Affairs and the Fight Against Corruption of the Senate of Uzbekistan, Dr. Muhammad Abdulhakim Kandiy Azhari, Director of the Marifet City Center in India, and Prof. Abdukadir Taşkulov, Rector of Tirmiz State University, each delivered a speech.
The speakers highlighted the unique spiritual legacy left behind by the great hadith scholar Imam Tirmidhi, who was raised in the Tirmiz region, and al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi, one of the prominent figures in the history of Islamic thought, as well as the global scientific value of this legacy. It was also emphasized that the forum, while bringing the Islamic world’s deep-rooted scientific tradition back to light through modern research, it also sent a powerful message to the entire world about the culture of peace, tolerance, and coexistence that lies at the heart of this shared scholarly pursuit.
General Assembly and paper presentation
The General Assembly held following the opening speeches featured paper presentations by international scholars presented on the influences of the Tirmidhi school of hadith.
While Prof. Dr. Ahmed Bensagir, Director of the Laghouat Center for Islamic Sciences and Civilization Studies in Algeria, delivered a presentation on “The Prestigious Position of the Imam Tirmidhi School of Hadith Among Subsequent Generations”, Dr. Yahya Pallavicini, the President of the European Council of Muslim Leaders presented a paper on “The Contribution of the Tirmidhi School of Hadith to the Development of Islamic Sciences in Europe” in which he highlighted that hadith traditions shaped by Tirmidhi are currently being studied in European academic circles and Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin Özafşar, Faculty Member of the Faculty of Theology of the Ankara University shared research perspectives to examine Tirmidhi’s works in light of modern scientific approaches in his paper on “Bringing Hakim al-Tirmidhi into the Present: Three Proposals for Original Scholarly Studies.”
Decisions for the Future and Closing Remarks
Paper presentations featured detailed discussions on the scientific criteria established by Imam Tirmidhi in the science of hadith, the place of “Sunan al-Tirmidhi” in the history of hadith, and the role of the legacy of great scholars in modern research.
In the closing session of the conference, participants emphasized that one of the most important tasks of our time is to examine the legacy of the Tirmidhi hadith school in greater depth, to research rare manuscripts, to expand international academic cooperation, and to pass on the rich scholarly and spiritual legacy of Tirmidhi scholars—particularly Imam Tirmidhi—to future generations.
The conference ended following sessions of general evaluation.
