Hungarian-Turkic Summit of Higher Education and Innovation held in Budapest
The Hungarian-Turkic Summit on Culture, Higher Education and Innovation, hosted by the Hungarian Ministry of Culture and Innovation and held in Budapest on April 29th, 2025 aimed at raising the cooperation between Turkic States and Hungary in the fields of culture, higher education, research and innovation to a strategic level.
The Summit was attended by high-level representatives from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye and Uzbekistan, as well as TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev and Ambassador Kubanchbek Omuraliev, the Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States. TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev delivered a speech at the session of the summit held on April 29th, which he attended as a guest of honour.
At the third plenary session of the Summit, the ministers of culture of the participating countries exchanged views on the question “How can we better promote our common cultural ties and introduce them to the global community?”. In his speech, TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev emphasized the historical ties between Hungary and the Turkic World and the deepening dimensions of cultural cooperation.
Speaking about the contribution of Hungarian scholars to the development of Turkology in the 19th century, Mr. Raev who referred to joint projects carried out in cooperation of TURKSOY with Hungarian institutions in recent years.recalled the pioneering role of Ármin Vámbéry in building bridges between cultures and said: “The international competition of poetry translation dedicated to the memory of Petőfi and the Painters’ Gathering held within this framework revived our common memory in literary and visual arts”
With the “Declaration on Cooperation between Hungary and Turkic States in the Fields of Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Culture” adopted at the Summit, the parties committed to initiate project cooperation in priority areas such as coordination among museums, joint film and animation productions, creative industry activities, joint university programs and artificial intelligence-biotechnology.
The Declaration also devoted a special paragraph to the successful cultural cooperation activities carried out by TURKSOY between the member countries and Hungary, and expressed a strong will for the continuation of this cooperation. The institutional contribution of TURKSOY in the field of cultural diplomacy was highlighted with exemplary practices and its role in the promotion of common cultural heritage was emphasized with appreciation.
In his opening speech, the Hungarian Minister of Culture and Innovation Balázs Hankó said that the summit aims at the strengthening of scientific and cultural cooperation as well as of mutual understanding between peoples and added: “This summit aims at fostering the cultural development of future generations”.
At the end of the summit, a joint declaration was signed by representatives of participating countries, confirming their will to take concrete steps towards the development of cultural cooperation at regional level.
