Global Media Forum held in Shusha
The Global Media Forum was held in the city of Shusha in Azerbaijan on July 21st-23rd, 2023. The forum dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Haydar Aliyev, the National Leader of Azerbaijan and the 148th anniversary of the National Press Media of Azerbaijan featured a session entitled "The New Media in the Era of the 4th Industrial Revolution" during which issues of key importance in the field of media, information and communication were discussed.
The opening session of the Forum featured a panel discussion with the participation of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. The Secretary General of TURKSOY Mr. Sultan Raev and the Secretary General of the Organisation of Turkic States Mr. Kubanychbek Omuraliyev attended the forum as guests of honour.
The forum which took place with the participation of more than 150 media members from 50 countries featured discussions on key issues such as “The Future of Media”, “The Role of Media in Journalism and Communication in the Digital Age”, “New Tools, Investment and Consumer Trends in the Media”, “Security Issues” amongst others. While 34 countries were represented by state agencies, the forum gathered 60 local media representatives and 12 representatives of international organizations as well as many volunteers from Azerbaijan.
Within the framework of the forum, participants also had the opportunity to visit Shusha as well as the symbolic city of Karabakh which they visited together with Mr. Hikmet Hajiyev, the Adviser to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Thanks to the cultural programme organized alongside with the forum, participants who were informed about the unique architectural style of Shusha, the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2023, also got closely acquainted with the national and cultural heritage of the Azerbaijani people. During the visit to Karabakh, participants who got an insight into the damages caused to historical and cultural assets of the region during its occupation by Armenian forces also had the opportunity to see restoration and reconstruction activities carried out in Shusha.
The participants visited the Lower Govheragha and Upper Govheragha mosques and were shown the work carried out to erase the traces of the destruction of the mosques during the occupation period after the liberation of Shusha. The Kazanci Church, which was built in the 19th century, was also visited and participants were told that the Azerbaijani government restored not only mosques but also the buildings of other religions in accordance with the original.
The sightseeing tour was followed by a gala dinner during which participants also had the opportunity to enjoy music and dance performances by Azerbaijani artists.
