Flags lowered at half-mast at TURKSOY Headquarters
Following two devastating earthquakes which struck Kahramanmaraş in the South-Eastern part of the Republic of Turkey along with 10 other provinces in the region, the President of the Republic of Turkey Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced a national mourning of seven days and TURKSOY lowered the flags of its member states at half-mast.
On February 7th, 2023, one day after the fatal earthquakes hit the country, staff members of TURKSOY gathered in front of the organization at 10:00 a.m. and observed a minute of silence to pay tribute to the victims of the devastating earthquakes.
With an intensity of 7.7 and 7.6 measured on the Richter scale, the two earthquakes which hit Kahramanmaraş and 10 neighbouring provinces have been the second most violent earthquakes ever recorded in Turkey for the last 100 years, causing the collapse of 5775 buildings along with a current death toll of 3432 people and 21103 injured. While several countries have offered their support to Turkey, figures are expected to rise as rescue teams perform their work onsite.
