Festival of Maqam Art in Uzbekistan
TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev attended the opening ceremony of the 2nd International Festival of Maqam Art hosted by the district of Zamin in the region of Jizzakh, which is known as the "Second Switzerland" in the world due to its unique nature.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasised the history and importance of the art of maqam. The Festival of Maqam Art, which has now become a tradition, was first held in 2018 in Shahr-i-Sebz upon initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
In his speech, President Mirziyoyev who stressed that "the art of maqam art, which is a symbol of ancient history, rich culture and values of the Turkic world, holds an important place in the spiritual life of all Turkic peoples with its deep philosophical roots, unique art style and rich creative traditions" further added that the festival of maqam art, which has become a tradition, will continue to be held in the coming years.

President Mirziyayev further noted that the timeless masterpieces of the exquisite musical genre "Shashmakam" were recorded in Uzbekistan and added that an important book in 6 volumes was published and included in UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Simona Mikulescu, the President of the 42nd Session of the UNESCO General Conference and ICESCO Director General Salim Muhammad al-Malik also addressed the ceremony and congratulated the participants and guests.
The President of the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation Aktoty Raimkulova, the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States Mehmet Süreya Er, the Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Independent States Nurlan Seytimov, the Advisor to the President of Türkiye Yalçın Topçu, the Assistant to the President of Tajikistan for Social Development, Culture, and Public Relations Abdulla Rahmonzoda, the Minister of Culture, Information, Sports and Youth Policy of Kyrgyzstan Oltinbek Maksutov and the Minister of Culture of Azerbaijan Adil Gabil oglu Kerimli also attended the conference.
The festival which is attended by about 400 guests from more than 80 countries of Asia, Europe, North and South America and Africa will go on until June 30th, 2024.
