Conference on the Civilisation of the Turkic Peoples and Its Place in World Cultural History held in Aktau
On May 28th, 2025, the city of Aktau in the region of Mangystau in Kazakhstan hosted an important event on the intellectual and cultural potential of the Turkic World. The International Scientific Conference on ‘The Civilisation of Turkic Peoples and Its Place in World Cultural History’ was organised in cooperation of TURKSOY with the Regional Administration of Mangystau and the Yesenov Hazar University of Technology and Engineering, with the participation of academics from various countries.
The conference addressed the historical development, cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and contributions of Turkic peoples to world civilisation through various scientific sessions. Presentations by experts in fields such as archaeology, anthropology, literature, linguistics, and history raised great interest.
On behalf of TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev, the Representative of Kazakhstan to TURKSOY Mrs. Nişangül Karatayeva delivered a welcoming speech to greet the audience which gathered the Deputy Governor of Mangystau Mr. Tilegen Abishev, the Senator of the Parliament of Kazakhstan Prof. Dr. Darhan Kydyrali, and the Rector of the Yesenov Hazar University of Technology and Engineering Prof. Dr. Berik B. Ahmetov.
Representing TURKSOY, the International Organization of Turkic Culture, the Expert Dr. Timur B. Davletov delivered a paper entitled ‘Cremation in the Context of Fire Worship in Hakas Shamanism’ at the Roundtable meeting gathering the Consul General of the Republic of Türkiye in Aktau Sabri Alptekin, and the Rector Prof. Dr. Berik B. Ahmetov.
The conference, which was attended by scholars from TURKSOY member countries Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Türkiye, and Hungary, the member country of TURKSOY with an observer status Hungary, as well as from the Russian Federation, featured approximately 50 scientific papers. The papers of the conference will be published in an academic book in the coming days.
At the end of the event, participants were taken on a special ‘Cultural Tour to Mangystau’ and visiting important cultural and natural sites in the region, including the underground mosques of Beket Ata and Şakpak Ata, Beş Barmaq Mountain, and the Bozjıra Canyon.
