Commemorative Conference dedicated to the Famous Hungarian Turcologist Dr. Vilmos Diószegi

The  delegation of TURKSOY composed of  Mr. Kemal Ün, Chief Advisor to the Secretary General of the International Organization of Turkic Culture (TURKSOY) and Dr. Timur B. Davletov, TURKSOY Expert for Siberia, attended the Memorial Conference held on  June 4th-5th, 2023 in Budapest, the capital of Hungary on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birthday of the famous Hungarian Turcologist and researcher of Shamanism Dr. Vilmos Diószegi.

The  commemorative conference was organized in cooperation of TURKSOY with the Institute of Ethnology of the Humanities Research Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Hungarian Ethnographic Museum, the International Turkic Academy and the Organization of Turkic States uıpon  invitation of Prof. Dr. János Hóvári, Executive Director of the  Representation Office of the Organization of Turkic States in Hungary.

Prof. Dr. Balázs Balogh, Director General of the Institute of Ethnology of the Centre for Humanities Research, Prof. Dr. Balázs Balogh, President of the International Turkic Academy Prof. Dr. Shahin Mustafayev, the Senior Advisor to TURKSOY Secretary General Kemal Un, the famous researcher on Shamanism Prof. Dr. Mihály Hoppál and project directors Géza Gonda, Kanat Ydyrys, Aida Somfai and Prof. Dr. János Hóvári welcomed the participants and guests.

In his speech, Mr. Kemal Ün welcomed  participants on behalf of TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev and expressed his honour to be present at the commemorative conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Vilmos Diószegi.

Referring to the importance of the year 2023 for the Turkic World, Mr. Ün noted that this year marks  the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, the 100th anniversary of the birthday of the national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev, the Declaration of Shusha as Cultural Capital of the Turkic World and the 100th anniversary of the birthday of the great Turcologist Vilmos Diószegi.

Mr.  Ün further  said: "Celebrating the 30th anniversary of its foundation and participating in this event for the first time, TURKSOY is honoured to be in close cooperation with Hungary and the organisers of this event. On behalf of TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan RAEV, who unites and represents the Ministers of Culture of 14 Turkic States, we would like to express our gratitude to the organisers of this event for their significant contribution to the efficient promotion of Turkic Culture."

The conference gathered participants from 12 countries along with ambassadors of Turkic countries in Hungary and was held in three sessions  chaired by TURKSOY Siberia Expert Dr Timur B. Davletov and Dr Gábor Wilhelm. Dr. Gábor Wilhelm, presented a paper on "Khakas Shamanism as One of the Factors of Ancient Cultural, Religious and Ethnogenetic Ties of the Turkic Peoples of the Kyrgyz Land and Southern Siberia".

Participants of the conference, Dr. István Sántha, Prof. Dr. Judith Hangartner, Dr. Dávid Somfai Kara, Prof. Dr. Sampildondov Chuluun, Prof. Dr. Ivan Peshkov, Dr. Liesbet Nielsen, Dr. Victoria Peemot, Dr. Zsolt Szilágyi, Dr. Gábor Wilhelm, Dr. Gombosuren Uranbay, Dr. Gombosuren Uranbay, Dr. Zsolt Szilágyi, Dr. Zsolt Szilágyi, Dr. Gábor Wilhelm, Dr. Zsolt Szilágyi, Dr. Zsolt Szilágyi, Dr. Victoria Peemot, Gombosuren Uranbayar, Dr Krisztina Pálóczy and Tímea Bata presented scientific papers on the life, field research and scientific legacy of Dr Vilmos Diószegi, as well as on Shamanism, the ancient religion of the Turks, Mongols and Tungus-Manchu peoples.

Upon invitation of Mr Sándor Lezhak, Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, the delegation of TURKSOY visited the Hungarian ethnographic complex in the city of Lakitelek. In the ethnographic, health and sports complex reflecting Hungarian ethnic culture, a working meeting hosted by Sándor Lezhak was held on joint activities in the context of the interaction of Turkic cooperation organizations. 

The meeting gathered the delegation of the International Turkic Academy, headed by President Prof. Dr. Shahin Mustafayev and including Expert Dinmuhammed Ametbek, the delegation of the  Representation Office of the Organization of Turkic States in Hungary headed by Prof. Dr. János Hóvári and including project directors Géza Gonda and Kanat Ydyrys, and Dr. Judit Kisfaludi-Bak, Chief of Staff of the Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly.
