International conference on "The Siberian Turkic Legend Tradition and Shamanism" held in TURKSOY Headquarters on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the birthday of the Khakas turcologist, folklorist and poet Alevtina Maytakova.
The conference held in hybrid format in the conference hall of the Headquarters of TURKSOY was organized in cooperation of TURKSOY with the Department of Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literature of the Faculty of Language and History of the Ankara University and featured contributions by many Turkish and foreign scholars doing research on legends of the Turkic World.
In the opening speech he delivered at the conference, the Deputy Secretary General of TURKSOY Assoc.Prof. Dr. Bilal Çakıcı expressed his happiness to see that far from being only seen as a commemorative event dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birthday of the Khakas turcologist, folklorist and poet Alevtina Maytakova this conference also turned into a scientific platform of fruitful exchanges among scholars of the Turkic World. Deputy Secretary General Çakıcı who also said that Secretary General Kasseinov could not attend the conference due to the fact that he is on duty abroad introduced the video message he conveyed to the participants.
In his video message, Secretary General Kasseinov said that TURKSOY attaches particular importance to the publication of heroic legends which are an essential part of Turkic Shaman mythology and that it has therefore already issued many publications on legends of the Turkic World until now.
Secretary General Kasseinov went on saying: “As other Turkic peoples, the Khakas Turkic poeple also has many heroic legends. The ancient Turkic Shaman mythology featuring patterns dating back to thousands of years has been transmitted from one generation to the next until today by the Khakas people living in Siberia since the dawn of times. TURKSOY played an active role in introducing this rich heritage to the world and published Khakas legends such as ‘Huban Arığ’, ‘Han Mirgen’ and ‘Ah Çibek Arığ’. Among these legends which have been translated into Anatolian Turkic language by Dr. Timur Davletov, the legend of ‘Huban Arığ’ which was published in 2006 and features approximately 15600 verses which deal with the female heroes of the Khakas Turkic people was recounted by the great Khakas throat singer Semön Shulbayev and recorded by Alevtina Maytakova.”
Secretary General Kasseinov who said that TURKSOY will further pursue its activities on heroic legends of the Turkic World which are an encyclopedia of folk wisdom and culture, expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to the organization of the conference and added that all papers presented therein will be published as a book later on.
The Chair of the Department of Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literature of the Faculty of Language and History of the Ankara University Prof. Dr. Sema Barutcu Özönder who also delivered an opening speech at the conference stressed the important role played by TURKSOY which has been promoting Turkic culture and art beyond the Turkic World and expressed her happiness to be participating in a conference organized in cooperation with TURKSOY.

Prof. Dr. Özönder who also stressed that legends are the most essential components of our oral tradition concluded saying: “Legends are litteraly the cement and most important component of our oral tradition throughout the Turkic World. Turkic legends featuring thousands of verses have been transkitted from one generation to the next by the Khakas "Khaiji", the Kyrgyz “Manaschy”, the Kazak “Akyn”, the Turkmen “Bakshi” and the "Ozan" and "Minstrel" of other peoples of ours."
Prof. Dr. Sema Barutcu Özönder who further said that with their joint project on Legends of the Turkic World, TURKSOY and the Turkish Language Institution have engaged into an academic research project and that major achievements are being reached within this framework concluded saying: “However, as far as we can see, there are still legends of ours which remain to be published. Hence, I think that in cooperation with TURKSOY, wecould bring together folklorists, linguists and legend experts and record videos on oral traditions of the Turkic World which would then be kept as precious documents of reference. I think that in terms of activities it carries out TURKSOY which is a gateway of for the Turkic World reaching out to the world in general is the only instititution which can carry out this task in the best way possible.”
