Conference on "Current Issues Regarding Research on "Kutadgu Bilig", the Great Masterpiece of World Turcology"
TURKSOY participated in the conference dedicated to the 950th Anniversary of “Kutadgu Bilig”, the Great Written Masterpiece of Turcology by the famous poet, scholar and philosopher of Turkic Islamic history, Yusuf Khass Hajip Balasagun.
The conference held on November 27th, 2020 by the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies on the occasion of the 950th Anniversary of “Kutadgu Bilig”, the Great Written Masterpiece of Turcology featured 50 participants from 36 organizations and universities of 12 countries and dealt with current issues regarding the research thereon.
In the opening speech he deilvered at the conference, the Deputy Secretary General of TURKSOY, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilal Çakıcı said that despite the 950 years elapsed since the day it was written, this masterpiece is still of actuality. Mr. Cakici expressed his wish as to the fact that the conference shall be an opportunity for new perspectives to be developed based on in-depth research on Kutadgu Bilig which is one of the common values and masterpieces of the Turkic World and further said: “A masterpiece such as Kutadgu Bilig is of great importance in so far as it was written by a Turkic intellectual 1000 years ago and stands as a testimony of the level of civilization already reached by the Turkic nation back then."
On the occasion of the 1000th anniversary his birthday, TURKSOY had declared the year 2016 as Year of Yusuf Khass Hajip and dedicated its activities carried out in that year to his commemoration and promotion throughout the Turkic World. TURKSOY pursues its activities based on its awareness of the extent to which it is important to promote illustrious personalities who marked Turkic civilization along with unique works they left behind for us as their legacy.”
“Kutadgu Bilig”
The unique masterpiece of Eastern Literature “Kutadgu Bilig” (Science which leads to Felicity) was written 950 years ago (in 1069/1070) by the great philosopher Yusuf Khass Hajip. It contains more than thirteen thousand verses and is to be qualified as a masnavi.
“Kutadgu Bilig” is an exquisite work of literature which offers a comprehensive insight into Turkic peoples' views regarding the concept of human perfection, the management of state and society, the importance of knowledge, morals and culture, philosophical views, children's education, good manners, virtues and characteristics of human beings. At the same time, this work is also a priceless heritage of ancient written Turkic literature which inspired the writing of many works not only in Turkic literature but also in Eastern Islamic literature.
"Kutadgu Bilig" which also raises great interest among peoples of the world has been translated into Uzbek, Turkish, German, Russian, English, Uyghur, Kazak, Turkmen, Azerbaijani and Kyrgyz languages by scholars who published academic research articles and thesis thereon.
While TURKSOY had declared the year 2016 as Year of Yusu Khass Hajip on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of his birthday, UNESCO had declared the year 2019 as International Year of “Kutadgu Bilig”.
