Closing Ceremony of the Year of Molla Panah Vagif held in Baku
The closing ceremony of the Year of Molla Panah Vagif declared by the
International Organization of Turkic Culture TURKSOY in commemoration of the 300th
anniversary of the birthday of the great poet of the Turkic World took place on
December 7th, 2017 in the State Academic National
Drama Theater of Azerbaijan.
The event which took place in the presence of TURKSOY Secretary General Dusen Kasseinov and a delegation of the Authors’ Union of the Republic of Kabardino Balkaria (RF) gathered famous artists, authors, scholars, artists and intellectuals along with state officials of Azerbaijan. The event also featured an exhibition of Vagif’s works as well as books on the poet’s life and creativity.
In the opening speech he delivered at the event, the Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Ebulfes Garayev touched upon the contribution of Molla Panah Vagif to the literature of Azerbaijan. Mr. Garayev further said: “It is a tradition in Azerbaijan to celebrate the anniversary of famous personalities and promote their works. The 300th anniversary of the birthday of Molla Panah Vagif has been celebrated with many events not only in Azerbaijan but also throughout the Turkic World. Within this framework various works on Vagif have been published. These include: a book by the scholar Nizami Caferov on the poet’s life and work “Molla Panah Vagif” and a book entitled “Molla Panah Vagif. Bibliography” prepared by the National Library along with a collection of “Molla Panah’s Poems in World Languages” published by TURKSOY.
Minister Garayev further said that despite the difficult times he lived in, Vagif remained worthy of his reputation in the hearts of the people of Azerbaijan until the end of his life and has considerablu contributed to the enrichment of the literature and language of Azerbaijan. Mr. Garayev also said that Vagif’s name was included in UNESCO’s list of illustrious personalities and important events to be commemorated in 2016-2017 and added that this clearly shows the importance attached to this great author of the rich literature of Azerbaijan who has also been commemorated by TURKSOY throughout the year 2017 which it declared as “Year of Molla Panah Vagif”.
Minister Garayev who also reminded of the fact that on January 14th, 1982 a mausoleum was inaugurated on the tomb of the poet in Shusha, the ancient center of civilization of Azerbaijan upon initiative and with the participation of the great leader Haydar Aliyev, said that just as all historical monuments and cultural sites of the city of Shusha invaded by Armenia, the tomb and mausoleum of Vagif has also been destroyed.
In the speech he delivered at the event, TURKSOY Secretary General Dusen Kasseinov said: “It is with great happiness that I am attending this event to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birthday of Molla Panah Vagif, the great poet of the Turkic World. As an international organization established in order to foster the ties of brotherhood among Turkic peoples and promote the culture of the Turkic World, TURKSOY annually declares commemorative years to pay tribute to the legacy of illustrious personalities of the Turkic World. Hence, within the framework of the “Year of Molla Panah Vagif” declared by TURKSOY, many events have been realized in our member countries.
The Chairman of the Authors’ Union of the Republic of Kabardino Balkaria Mutallip Beppayev who touched upon the creativity of this great poet also stressed the philosophical dimension and the transparency of his literary style. Mr. Beppayev who also mentioned activities carried out by the poet in the field of politics and state affairs recited a poem by Vagif which he translated into Balkar language himself.
The event
held on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Molla Panah Vagif went on with
music performances and poem readings as well as a theater performance by famous
artists of Azerbaijan.
