2017 The Year of Molla Panah Vagif
The Meeting of Ministers of Culture of Turkic Speaking Countries held in the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World selected every year by the International Organization of Turkic Culture gathered representatives of Turkic countries in Azerbaijan.
The 34th Term Meeting of the Permanent Council of TURKSOY hosted by the Term Coordinator of TURKSOY and Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Ebulfes GARAYEV took place on December 1st, 2016 and gathered Ministers of Culture of TURKSOY member countries along with representatives of the Turkic Council.
Prior to the meeting, members of the Permanent Council of TURKSOY visited the Haydar Aliyev Memorial where they laid a garland. Ministers of Culture of Turkic Speaking Countries then came together imn the Marxal Complex where they discussed activities carried out by TURKSOY in 2016 and made major decisions regarding the year 2017.
2017 Declared as Year of Molla Panah Vagif
In the meeting where major decisions were made regarding cultural and artistic activities to be carried out in 2017, members of the Permanent Council unanimously agreed upon the declaration of the year 2017 as Year of Molla Panah Vagif in TURKSOY member countries in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of his birthday.
Within the framework of commemorative years it declares, TURKSOY organizes panels, concerts, exhibitions and festivals to pay tribute to the memory of illustrious personalities of the Turkic World who served Turkic culture and contributed to the evolution of humanity. Thanks to these activities, the cultural heritage left behind by these personalities is not only being preserved but also transmitted to young generations. In line with this initiative to declare commemorative years, TURKSOY dedicated the year 2010 to the commemoration of the 120th anniversary of the birthday of the Bashkort scholar Prof. Dr. Zeki Velidi Togan. The year 2011 was then declared Year of the Tatar Poet Abdullah Tukay, in memory of the 125th anniversary of his birthday. The year 2012 was dedicated to the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birthday of the Azerbaijani dramaturgist Mirza Fatali Ahundzade and to the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birthday of the anniversary of the Khakas turcologist Nikolay Katanov. The year 2013 was declared Year of the Kazak composer Mukan Tulebayev in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his birthday. The year 2014 was dedicated to the commemoration of the 290th anniversary of the birthday of the Turkmen philosopher and poet Magtumguly Pyragy and the 150th anniversary of the birthday of Toktogul Satylganov. Then, the year 2015 was declared Year of the Turkish Playwright Haldun Taner on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birthday and Year of the famous Khakas author of legends Simion Kadyshev on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of his birthday. Finally, the year 2016 was dedicated to the commemoration of the famous Turkish philosopher Yusuf Khass Hajip on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of his birthday.
Who is Molla Panah Vagif ?
Molla Panah Vagif is one of the most important authors of Azerbaijan who lived in the 18th Century. Vagif was born in the village of Gırag Salahh in 1717 and died in 1797. Vagif is known as the poet of beauty and love in the history of Azerbaijani poetry. The realistic tune of his poems describing the feelings of the people is characterized by an innovative style in terms of language and aesthetics. Vagif’s poems “Look” and “I Have Not Seen” are the most important examples of Azerbaijani literature of the Middle Ages. Molla Panah Vagif whose poems have been published several times, has also been dealt with in various papers and literary works.
